Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? Then come to me. I will refresh your life, for I am your oasis. Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in me. For all that I require of you will be pleasant and easy to bear.
Matthew 11:29 (TPT)
Today God took me through what it means to rest in Him. He wants to take over our life and handle all the issues that our currently weighing us down. His word says, ‘Simply join your life with mine’. There is an invitation from our Father to share our burdens, shame, hurt and pain with Him. He is not afraid to take them nor is He incapable of handling them. We just have to be willing to hand it over and share with Him.
The second request from our Father is for us to, Learn His ways and discover Him. He doesn’t just want us to share our life with Him but He wants us to learn how He does things so we can emulate Him. He says to us that He is gentle, humble and easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in Him.
We are going to discover a gentle, humble and easy to please Father, who promises us refreshment and rest.
He is gentle – A gentle God doesn’t rush people. He is kind to people and make people feel at ease around Him. Gentleness is a fruit of the spirit that we are expected to bear as people who are filled with the Holy Spirit. If we are not gentle with people, we cannot be compassionate with them and be all that we can be to them in whatever situation they are in. The Bible says in Philippians 4 that,
Let your gentle spirit [your graciousness, unselfishness, mercy, tolerance, and patience] be known to all people. The Lord is near.
Philippians 4:5 (AMP)
He is humble – Humility is not puffed up but it is submissive, full of honour and respect others even if they are wrong. Humility can correct people without putting them down. Humility brings exaltation in due time. A humble Jesus is what Paul describes in Philippians.
8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name.
Philippians 2:8-9 (NKJV)
Easy to please – An easy to please God does not set the bar of expectation so high that people cannot please Him. We can’t expect the people around us to constantly go above and beyond for us. We need to lower the expectations bar so people can easily please us. We should have the heart of a child and believe all things and see the good in all.
You will find refreshment and rest in me – To refresh us, God will take all the junk out and clear us out. When I spend time alone with Him in His presence, He will refresh me. Life can fill me with all sorts of issues, but Father refuels me with greener pastures and lead me by the still and quiet waters. I cannot spend time with Him and not get the rest I need. Sometimes that will mean just leaving all behind and lying on the green pastures God is offering.
He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still and quiet waters. He refreshes and restores my soul (life); He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
Psalms 23:2-3 (AMP)
I need to rest in Him as He shows me the peaceful streams of my life. This kind of rest will give me the restoration I need to jump out into the path He has laid out for me. God will give me the strength to go on the path of righteousness He has set for me, for His name’s sake.
Let us take God on His offer of rest and restoration and lay all our burdens at His feet.
May you be filled with the Fullness of God and the Power of His Love!
