As the son of God, Jesus came on earth in human form to relate to humanity. Jesus could have come on earth as a spiritual being, but God knew that humans would find it challenging to relate to a spiritual being. It was no surprise when, at the age of 12, he baffled the religious leaders in the synagogue with His immense knowledge of God. Even His parents were astonished about how their heavenly child showed so much enthusiasm for the word and work of God. I guess like any mother who grows fond of their child; Mary couldn’t move past the fact that Jesus was her little boy and not the heavenly being God placed in her womb. Throughout His life on earth, Jesus demonstrated an amazing relationship with His father, showing a total dependence on God; He always attributed everything He did to His Father. On several occasions, the Bible said Jesus retreated from the crowd to spend time with His Father.
Hence for every miracle and word He delivered, He had His father’s authority and power backing Him. Jesus utilised His knowledge of God to access all the heavenly resources available to Him. What was fascinating, though, about Jesus’ life on earth was that He was not immune to this world’s troubles and woes. To contextualise:
- Jesus was rejected by His own family and townsfolk. Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are His sisters not here with us?” And they were [deeply] offended by Him [and their disapproval blinded them to the fact that He was anointed by God as the Messiah]. Mark 6:3 AMP
- Jesus faced temptation in His weakest moment. And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him. Mark 1:13 NKJV
- Jesus experienced the loss of his dear friend, which affected Him so much that He cried. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.“Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied. Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” John 11:33-36 NIV
- Jesus was tired and worn-out. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food. John 4:6-8 NLT
- Jesus’ life was threatened when religious people nearly threw Him down a cliff. All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built in order to throw him off the cliff. Luke 4:28-29 NIV
- In His greatest hour of need, His best friend denied knowing Him. Meanwhile, Peter was still standing in the courtyard by the fire. And one of the guards standing there said to him, “Aren’t you one of his disciples? I know you are!” Peter swore and said, “I am not his disciple!” But one of the servants of the high priest, a relative to the man whose ear Peter had cut off, looked at him and said, “Wait! Didn’t I see you out there in the garden with Jesus?” Then Peter denied it the third time and said, “No!”—and at that very same moment, a rooster crowed nearby. John 18:25-17 TPT
- His own disciple betrayed him. Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Him to them. And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. So he sought how he might conveniently betray Him. Mark 14:10-11 NKJV
Now that we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help. Heb 4:14-16 MSG
But in all of these experiences, nothing changed Jesus’s love for His Father; He clung to the Father’s love till His last breath.
God has adopted us as His own children, and by this adoption, we have access to all the heavenly resources available to Jesus. God hands over to us all of Him, and that includes everything we need to live a fruitful and victorious life. Just like Jesus, our earthly parents are the conduits of our existence on earth, but our Father in heaven orchestrated our conception and birth. We are on earth because God chose to have us live on this earth for His purpose. “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born, I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5 NLT
God did not bring us onto this earth to live as orphans but as His true children. As adopted children, God offers us all of Him, but we have a choice to accept what is being offered and to live as His true children. We can enjoy all of the heavenly resources if we accept the relationship God offers.
The mature children of God are those who are moved by the impulses of the Holy Spirit. And you did not receive the “spirit of religious duty,” leading you back into the fear of never being good enough But you have received the “Spirit of full acceptance,” enfolding you into the family of God. And you will never feel orphaned, for as he rises up within us, our spirits join him in saying the words of tender affection, “Beloved Father!” For the Holy Spirit makes God’s fatherhood real to us as he whispers into our innermost being, “You are God’s beloved child!” And since we are his true children, we qualify to share all his treasures, for indeed, we are heirs of God himself. And since we are joined to Christ, we also inherit all that he is and all that he has. We will experience being co-glorified with him provided that we accept his sufferings as our own. Romans 8:14-17 TPT
What are the rights of adopted children? They lay claim to whatever their adopted parents say is theirs. Children do not lose their adoption because they don’t do what is right. Bad things happen to both good and bad people, but nothing changes God’s love for us. Isaiah says in chapter 54, “Though the mountains are shaken, and the hills are removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken, nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you”.
The difference between a baby’s adoption and a mature person’s adoption is that a baby has no preconceived mindset. So it’s so easy for that child to integrate into their adopted family and feel like a true member of that family. But for mature persons, they have their minds already set, so it’s harder for them to feel like part of the family. Jesus said we have to be like children to enter the kingdom of God. If we don’t become like children in God’s eyes, it will be hard to accept the relationship Jesus offers us through His death. My children have shown me that it’s easy for children to love God with all their hearts. They find it so easy to believe that God can do whatever they ask Him. My children demonstrate such a strong level of faith that amazes me all the time. I don’t have their level of faith because I see all the barriers and the reasons why something can’t happen.
Sometimes the challenges we face will throw us off and make us feel like God has abandoned us, but every parent can testify that abandoning our children in their hard times is not an option in parenting. In our children’s hardest moments, we do everything in our power to help them out. Our love pours out abundantly to them when they are at their lowest, and so why do we think God will do otherwise?
God never abandons His children, and He is always with us to help us as any parent would. If only we can look beyond the raging waters like Peter, we can see a Father holding our hands. In whatever we may face, God wants us to focus on Him, so we can get the strength, wisdom and insight to overcome. I believe the secret to Jesus’s successful ministry on earth was that He had an insight about a faithful Father who will always come through for Him, and so in every challenge, Jesus faced on earth, He leaned on the love of God to get Him through it all.
As adopted children of God, we should be convinced in our spirit without a shadow of a doubt that nothing we do can stop God from loving us. God has enough love to overcome every sin we may ever commit and every challenge we may ever face. God is committed to loving us because His love is from everlasting to everlasting.
How do we grasp all of these? Jesus’ knowledge of the Father He knew in heaven is what empowered Him to do all He did. We can also know Him in that way by spending time with Him. The more we grow in our knowledge of the Father, the more our hearts will be receptive to what He is offering us. Everything Jesus did was out of the knowledge of the His Father.
So Jesus said, “I speak to you timeless truth. The Son is not able to do anything from himself or through my own initiative. I only do the works that I see the Father doing, for the Son does the same works as his Father. “Because the Father loves his Son so much, he always reveals to me everything that he is about to do. And you will all be amazed when he shows me even greater works than what you’ve seen so far! John 5:19-20 TPT
God does not want us to strive in this world, chasing after the wind and carrying unnecessary burdens around. His relationship with us assures us of perfect peace in the midst of the chaos and grant us divine access to resources we otherwise wouldn’t have received. Like the woman at the well, God offers us His living water that can fully and truly satisfy. If anything is weighing you down in this season, leave it with your Father and let Him embrace you with His perfect love and so you can live your life fruitful and victorious in all seasons.

God bless you too my sister!
So funny that I have finally got around to reading this – only to discover that I have been meditating on exactly the same version (tPT) of Romans 8 this week. The wonder of being His children – what privilege, safety and authority comes with that. I think we need to be careful that ‘Fruitful and Victorious’ is understood in terms of heavenly values and not worldly ones – sometimes our outer lives can appear to be anything but!! Thanks dear Cathy xx
I always say that God has a good sense of humour. He knows when a message will be relevant to you. I can really relate to this.
Thanks for sharing your insight. God bless you
